On Thursday, November 30, the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) Foundation hosted a dedication and blessing of TMH’s new helipad – named after local Tallahassee businesswoman, philanthropist and longtime TMH supporter Grace H. Dansby.
For decades, Grace Dansby has been a civic and philanthropic leader in the Big Bend region. Grace’s generosity has supported many community organizations including TMH, Florida State University and Big Bend Hospice. Grace served as the Vice Chair of the TMH Board of Directors and later went on to serve on the TMH Foundation Board of Trustees for over a decade. Grace was also a co-founder of the Foundation’s biggest annual event, Golden Gala. Grace’s distinguished service on the Golden Gala executive committee has been continuous for the last thirty years. However, her philanthropic efforts to support the community extend beyond the work she does at TMH.
Grace established and donated to the Sherill and Grace Dansby Scholarship Endowment for Medical Education at Florida State University (FSU). She attended FSU from 1947- 1948 and continues to give her support to the university. In addition, she provided 750 acres and Piney Z Lake to the city of Tallahassee. Grace has also donated the magnificent manatee sculpture and fountain along with a significant donation to the Bixler Trauma & Emergency Center and other TMH patient care units.
With all the work Grace has done for both TMH and the Tallahassee community, the TMH Foundation felt that it was a “no-brainer” to name the helipad after her.
“We found it very fitting that the people who are arriving to TMH by helicopter – which are typically those who are in critical condition – are arriving on the ‘Grace’ H. Dansby Helipad,” said Mickey Moore, President of the TMH Foundation. “Whether they see her name “Grace” plastered along the helipad or whether they know how much she has contributed to that helipad, grace is something that these patients coming to us need in that moment.”
While TMH already has one helipad, the construction of a second helipad was integral to coincide with the hospital’s expansion project of the M.T. Mustian Center. Thanks to Grace’s and many others’ support, the second helipad has become a reality and will play a huge factor in continuing to provide patients with fast, life-saving care. At the unveiling of the helipad, donors, community leaders and board members gathered to dedicate the helipad to Grace. As Grace has dedicated much of her life to giving back to the community, it is only fitting to recognize her for her philanthropic efforts.
Grace has been recognized as a “Legend in Service” by TMH in every respect and sense. She is admired and respected by one and all, and dedicating this helipad to Grace is a small way to honor her for her gracious support to the Tallahassee community.
