Don’t Ignore Your Snore

Snoring is a common occurrence in many households. However, if snoring happens frequently, it can affect the quantity and quality of your sleep. Some common concerns are poor sleep, daytime fatigue, irritability and increased health problems.

Common Causes for Snoring
When a person sleeps on their back, the base of the tongue and soft palate fall to the rear of the throat, which may lead to snoring. Other factors include weight gain (especially in the neck region resulting in increased neck size greater than 17 inches), drinking alcohol, allergies/colds and if you have a recessed chin. Although common, signs of snoring in some could lead to bigger issues that shouldn’t be overlooked like developing sleep apnea or even having a stroke.

Snoring & Sleep Apnea
Snoring indicates your airway narrowing and not allowing enough air to pass through. Which means snoring is a concern for potentially developing sleep apnea, which is a condition that reduces the amount of oxygen that reaches your brain.

Snoring & Stroke
About 40% of strokes occur while a person is sleeping or in the morning hours – which leads us to believe there is a stroke link between snoring and stroke. Stroke is a serious medical emergency that occurs when blood flow is cut off to an area of the brain – a literal “brain attack.” Without blood flow, brain cells are deprived of oxygen, which limits the abilities controlled by those areas of the brain, such as memory and muscle control.

Talk to your primary care physician about your concerns with snoring or being overly tired. Getting a good night’s sleep might just be the key to preventing a bigger issue down the road!
